According to Mark Gurman, the latest version of Apple’s long-rumored mixed-reality headset includes the M2 system on a chip recently announced by the company and 16GB of RAM. The Bloomberg reporter shared the information in his latest Power On newsletter, along with details about a “flood” of devices Apple plans to launch over the next year, including a new HomePod speaker.
As The Verge points out, more recent reports, including those from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and The Information, have suggested that augmented and virtual reality headsets would include two processors. According to Kuo, one of the SoCs would have the same capabilities as the company’s M1 chip, while the other would be a low-end chip designed to handle data from the device’s sensors.
After years of rumors, there is growing evidence that Apple is approaching the day when it will finally announce its mixed reality headphones. In May, a Twitter user found evidence that Apple probably used a fictitious company to obtain trademarks for “RealityOS.” Earlier this year, developers also found references to the operating system in the App Store’s load logs. More recently, Tim Cook told China Daily that he “couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities” augmented and virtual reality offers, and told the publication that “stay tuned and you’ll see what we have to offer” in that regard.
