Brad Pitt has made a bleak assessment of the human condition as he goes through the collapse of his five-year marriage to actress Angelina Jolie.
The Hollywood star has embraced a life of abstinence that began shortly after her divorce ended in 2016, but her new positivity is tempered by the belief that we all experience heartbreaking pain at some point in our lives. .
Speaking at the last edition of British GQ, Pitt, 58, insisted that emotional confusion and deep sadness are an inevitable part of growth.

“I think all our hearts are broken,” he said. “I’ve always felt very lonely in my life, growing up as a kid, lonely even out here, and it really wasn’t until recently that I had a bigger hug from my friends and family.
“What that line is, was it Rilke or Einstein, believe it or not, but it was something about when you can walk with paradox, when you bring real pain and real joy at the same time, that’s maturity, that’s growth.”
Despite the feeling of primary isolation, Pitt admits that he has found community and friendship with his decision to quit alcohol in 2016.
