The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants to calm public anxiety about how the monkeypox virus is transmitted, noting that it does not spread so easily through the air because it requires close contact with an infected person.
Smallpox smallpox is transmitted primarily through sustained physical contact, such as skin-to-skin contact with someone who has an active rash, CDC officials said this week. The virus can also be spread by contact with materials that contain the virus, such as bedding and shared clothing. But it can also spread through the respiratory droplets, though not as easily as the Covid-19, they said.
A monkeypox patient with a sore throat or mouth injury can spread the virus through the airways if it is around another person for an extended period of time. However, the virus does not spread easily in this way, according to Dr. Jennifer McQuiston, a CDC official.
“This is not Covid,” McQuiston told reporters in a call Monday. “Respiratory spread is not the predominant concern. It is contact and intimate contact in the current environment and population of the outbreak.”
For example, nine people with monkeypox made long flights from Nigeria to other countries without infecting anyone else on the planes, according to McQuiston.
“It’s not a situation where if you walk past someone at the grocery store, you’re at risk for the monkey’s smallpox,” he said.
The lesions that characterize monkeypox are the source from which the virus spreads, and people are more infectious when these lesions appear on the skin, according to Dr. John Brooks, a medical epidemiologist with the AIDS Prevention Division. of the CDC.
However, Brooks said top health care providers should use standard precautions for infectious diseases when treating a patient with monkeypox, including wearing an N95 respirator, gloves, and a dressing gown if in contact. with the patient is especially close.
The United States has confirmed a case of smallpox in Massachusetts and four alleged cases in New York City, Florida and Utah that need further analysis. The CDC sequenced the Massachusetts patient’s virus in 48 hours and found a match of patients in Portugal, McQuiston said. Additional cases are likely to be reported in the coming days, he said.
Recent cases of monkeypox in the U.S. and around the world have been identified as the West African strain, a milder form of the virus. Smallpox belongs to the same family as smallpox, but it is not as serious. Most people who are infected with this smallpox strain recover in two to four weeks without specific treatment, McQuiston said.
Smallpox is usually started with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, exhaustion, and swollen lymph nodes. The disease then progresses to rashes that can spread to different parts of the body, such as the face, eyes, hands, feet, mouth, or genitals. These eruptions turn into high blows that turn into blisters. However, eruptions have appeared first in some of the recent cases.
The World Health Organization has identified some 200 confirmed or suspected cases in at least a dozen countries. The recent outbreaks are unusual because they are occurring in US and European countries where the virus is not endemic, such as Africa. Smallpox is commonly found in the rainforests of West and Central Africa, home to live animals that carry the virus.
The WHO said this week that the current virus appears to be spreading among men who have sex with men. Brooks, a CDC official, warned gay and bisexual men of the potential risk, though he stressed that anyone can spread the virus regardless of sexual orientation.
Brooks said monkeypox is not a sexually transmitted disease, which usually spreads through semen and vaginal fluids. It is important for doctors and individuals to know that some of today’s patients have anal or genital lesions that can be mistaken for sexually transmitted diseases such as herpes or syphilis, in addition to chickenpox, Brooks added.
“Anyone who has a rash or injury around or affects their genitals, anus or any other place they have not seen before should be fully evaluated, both for this rash and, above all, for the sexually transmitted infections and other diseases that can cause rashes, “he said.
The CDC plans to increase its public health messages before LGBTQ Pride Month, which begins in June, to make people in the community aware of the situation, Brooks said.
The recent outbreak of monkeypox in several countries is also different from Covid because there are already federally approved effective vaccines to prevent monkeypox. The United States has a stockpile of 100 million doses of an older generation smallpox vaccine called ACAM2000, which can be used to protect against monkeypox, although it can have significant side effects and any decision to distribute “It would require a serious discussion,” McQuiston said.
There is another vaccine, Jynneos, that targets smallpox and smallpox and does not have the same risk of significant side effects. It is given in two doses for people 18 years of age and older who are at high risk for smallpox or monkeypox. However, the United States has only 1,000 available doses of this vaccine, although pharmaceutical manufacturer Bavarian Nordic will begin increasing its production in the coming weeks, McQuiston said.
