Google announced that the Pixel 6a would not be released until late summer, but that has not stopped the filters from making fun of us. Over the weekend, Malaysian youtuber Fazli Halim posted an 11-minute tour of the upcoming Pixel 6a. The device on the roll matches the Pixel 6a previously seen during the opening conference of Google I / O 2022. It also aligns with the unlisted informative video Google Retail Training France released last month. (Video has since become private.)
I tried desperately to translate the Malay video with live YouTube subtitles, to no avail. But the video provides a glimpse into the look and feel of the phone. The video begins with a complete unpacking of the Pixel 6a in black and gray, also known as “charcoal” on the official Google Store listing. The case looks the same as the Pixel 6/6 Pro and includes a USB-C to USB-C charging cable, along with an adapter for transferring data between phones.
In the video, the Pixel 6a looks mid-range compared to the flagship Pixel 6. It looks a bit thicker, though it has a smaller 6.1-inch screen compared to the Pixel 6’s 6.4-inch screen. It also has the same rear camera bar that protrudes from the back, along with a camera system the back.
The YouTube video shows exactly the same camera specifications as the Google Store listing: a 12.2 MP wide pixel wide camera with an f / 1.7 aperture and a 77-degree field of view, along with a 12 MP ultra wide angle camera with a f / 2.2 aperture and 114 degree field of view. The front camera is an 8 MP camera with an 84 degree field of view.
The rest of the video includes a replay of everything we already know. Halim shows us how the Pixel 6a works with the Android 12 quick setup panel deployed and also with the home screen. We also take a quick look at the camera app and how fast it takes photos, but there’s nothing like using the device yourself. Perhaps the most illustrative part of the video is around 8 minutes, when Halim tries to sign in with a fingerprint and it takes about two or three attempts before the Pixel 6a is successfully unlocked.
The Pixel 6 will be officially launched on July 28 for $ 450 ($ 625). It is exempt from competing head-on with other mid-range smartphones, i.e. the iPhone SE for people using iOS and the Samsung Galaxy A53 for the rest of the generation using Android.
