The famous Gloucester Cheese Roll Contest is back today (Sunday, June 5th).
Brave aspirants – some might say reckless – competed to chase a Double Gloucester cheese wheel at Coopers Hill in Brockworth. The winners of the first two races were from the region.
But the back runners were won by guests from abroad, including a Belgian. Other contestants arrived from South Korea to take the steep slope.
The event usually takes place on the second holiday in May. But this year, because of the Jubilee that changes the holidays, it takes place on Sunday, June 5th.
The first race was at 12 noon. Organizers limited each race to 25 runners. The last race was at 13.40.
Attendees and contestants are warned to attend at their own risk. And the dangers have increased today after a lot of rain. Although there were some injuries, including one man who had to be taken away, it looked like most of them came out unscathed.
Below we will provide live updates throughout the day, including traffic updates and road closure information. More to follow.
