Daniel Ricciardo awaits the rain at the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc, originally from Monaco, starts on Sunday night from pole position in his Formula 1 race, with the threat of rain looming over the streets of Monte Carlo.

Key points:

  • There are chances of rain for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix, which some riders are waiting for
  • Daniel Ricciardo will start the race from the 14th after a disappointing qualifying session
  • Charles Leclerc will start in pole position with his fourth title rival Max Verstappen

The Ferrari driver was a class above the rest during Saturday’s qualifying session, and achieved his second pole in Monaco in so many years.

The Monegasque will hope to have more luck this year than in the 2021 race, where a problem with his Ferrari’s drive shaft prevented the Grand Prix from starting.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo has everything to do with his McLaren, starting the famous race in 14th place after a poor classification.

While teammate Lando Norris was able to finish fifth, Ricciardo did not find the same pace in his car.

The Australian said he expects bad weather during the race to help him cross a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult.

“We will continue like this and hope it rains,” he said.

Current world champion Max Verstappen has also said he expects the sky to open over Monaco, after finishing fourth.

Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship by six points over Leclerc, after winning the last races.

“I think I need to do a little rain dance, shake it up a bit for the race because dry you can’t go through here,” he said Saturday.
