Two weeks after launch, Blizzard’s Diablo Immortal has earned about $ 24 million for the troubled studio, according to Appmagic. In an estimate it shared with GameDev Reports, the analytics firm said the free game was downloaded nearly 8.5 million times over the same time period, with 26 percent of downloads originating in the U.S. . Most of Diablo Immortal’s Blizzard revenue also comes from America. So far, U.S. players have contributed about 43 percent of all game earnings.
To put Immortal’s initial financial success in context, Hearthstone, the only other mobile game Blizzard has released today, grossed about $ 5 million in May. Despite the vocal reaction to Immortal’s monetization systems, it’s safe to say that no one expected the game to fail at the door. Instead, the concern for many fans was a scenario in which Immortal was so successful for Blizzard that it reported how the studio monetized its future games.
For now, that fear seems unfounded. Diablo franchise general manager Rod Fergusson recently said that Diablo IV would include a different set of monetization systems than Immortal. “To be clear, D4 is a full-priced game designed for the PC / PS / Xbox audience,” he tweeted after the game’s recent launch at Microsoft’s recent Summer Game Fest. Separately, Blizzard announced this week that Overwatch 2 would remove the loot boxes.
