Early morning fire destroys Mayfair Avenue apartment building damaged by previous fires

Winnipeg firefighters were fighting a fire in an empty two-story apartment complex on the Osborne River on Saturday morning, which had been damaged by previous fires.

At around 2:20 a.m., crews were set on fire on Mayfair Avenue on the corner of Harkness Avenue, Winnipeg Fire Department paramedics said in a press release that morning.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

They used aerial ladders to fight the fire from above, because it was not safe to enter the burning building. Damage from the latest fire, along with previous fires, has increased the risk of collapse, according to the paramedic service of firefighters.

The building is a total loss, with its back sunken and its roof sunken.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was declared under control at 3:43 a.m., but firefighters were still on the scene Saturday morning and were expected to remain there throughout the morning to extinguish the hot spots.
