Edmonton family on the edge after a stray bullet flies through the daughter’s room

After a night full of loud Canada Day fireworks, residents in the Hazeldean neighborhood of south Edmonton woke up Saturday morning with a louder noise.

“I heard a noisy car this morning and then a couple of pops, explosions and that’s what woke me up,” said Will Mages, a Hazeldean resident.

“I’ve heard these two blows,” added another resident Blaire Charbonneau. “I was waiting and listening if I could hear something later.”

But Charbonneau did not, for the strong blows were not fireworks but shots.

Mike Corpuz, who also lives in the neighborhood, said he saw what happened shortly after 6 a.m. through the doorbell camera.

“There was an altercation, a red truck parked across the street made a turn to head west and then someone came out of (the house next door),” Corpuz said.

Corpuz added that was when someone hit the red truck with an object.

“After that, I heard two gunshots,” Corpuz said. “I got out of bed, grabbed my daughters and went downstairs. I noticed the window was broken and bullets went into my daughter’s room.”

Corpuz said a stray bullet entered a glass window in the room and another through the front door, luckily he missed him, his wife and three daughters.

“I was scared. First, I said, ‘My kids are fine, are they all right? Okay, now let’s go, let’s go down, we can’t stay up here, we have to go call the police, ”Corpuz said of his thought process during the incident.

Neighbors watched as the EPS Tactical reached the house next to Corpuz.

“Just listening through the speaker, the shocks (saying),‘ Get out of the house, lower your guns if you’re armed, lower your guns if we don’t get in there, ’” Charbonneau said.

Police said no one was injured and now there is no risk to the general public.

But that’s little convenience for Corpuz and his neighbors, as they want more to be done so that something like this never happens again in their neighborhood.

“I couldn’t even imagine what we would have done if the shots got to our little girl’s room, I couldn’t imagine how she would feel right now,” Charbonneau said.

“We were shot, my son just shot,” Corpuz said.

Police said there are no suspects at this time. Police said a vehicle that was seen leaving the area is being investigated.
