WWDC is both exciting and nerve-wracking for developers, as Apple is adding new products that are great, but that compete directly with them. These are the ads this year that will affect third parties.
A term known to many in the Apple community is “Sherlocking.” Sherlock, named after the fictional detective, was a search tool introduced in Mac OS 8. It extended the search for files in the Finder and was replaced by Spotlight in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
After the release of Sherlock, a company called Karelia Software created a tool called Watson. It complemented Apple’s search tool and supported more Internet functionality. But when Apple released Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar in 2002, version three of Sherlock contained almost everything Watson had to offer.
Watson cost $ 30, but Sherlock was free because it was integrated into the system, and Karelia left the business. Developer Dan Wood wrote a blog post saying that Apple CEO Steve Jobs told him this should happen.
“Do you know these hand cars, the little machines that people get up and pump to move on the train tracks? That’s Karelia,” Wood said at the time. “Apple owns the steam train.”
After that, the term approaches and “Sherlocking” refers to the products that Apple replaces with their versions. Many times, it has happened with third party products such as Konfabulator, f.lux, Growl and others.
These are features that Apple has advanced, that developers have already provided.
Passwords
Apple announced the keys, an initiative in which it has been working with Google, Microsoft and the FIDO Alliance.
These companies want to end passwords by creating a more secure version that people don’t have to remember. Many users do not have to remember passwords thanks to password managers.

But password keys are designed to be easier and faster to use, and password managers like 1Password and Bitwarden will have to rethink their strategies.
Announced on June 3, 1Password joins FIDO to navigate the future without passwords. In future versions of your password manager, starting with 1Password 8, users can sign in to the application without a password using WebAuthn.
WebAuthn is a protocol developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. Allow login without a password using public key encryption. In 1Password 8, users can integrate their private keys with the application, turning it into a virtual security key.
Apple passwords will support WebAuthn-based physical security keys. Although passwords will be stored in the iCloud Keychain, they can be used with platforms like Android and Windows with QR codes.
Webcams
Apple will compete with webcams and camera apps with Continuity Camera. Allows you to use an iPhone as a webcam for a Mac with handsome Ventura and iOS 16. No more applications or cables are needed than a stand to hold the iPhone in place.
Physical webcam manufacturers will not be out of business, but applications such as Camo, IVCam and EpocCAM may be more affected. These apps also allow an iPhone user to turn their device into a Mac webcam.
One consolation is that iOS 16 is no longer compatible with older iPhone hardware, such as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Customers will need to use these apps if they want a webcam without having to buy an expensive product.
MacOS Ventura Continuity Camera
The Continuity Camera will be available on iPhone 11 or later with iOS 16. It will use the iPhone’s wide-angle lens to provide multiple views and use software features such as Stage Light to enhance the user’s appearance on the screen .
Photo editing
Apple is facilitating the automatic isolation of a subject from its background within a photo. This works in the Photos & Files app by long-pressing the subject and tapping Copy or Share in the menu that appears. You can download a shortcut here to iOS 16, iPadOS 16 or macOS Ventura to automate the process.
Pixelmator Pro added a Magic Background Eraser in November 2021. Current evidence reveals that Apple’s offering has an advantage, as Pixelmator Pro sometimes has difficulty with similar colored themes and backgrounds.
Erasing the background is an added feature to popular photo editing apps, but a cursory search of the App Store reveals a lot of single-purpose drafts.
Some of these focused apps may disappear completely unless they can do a better job than Apple. Isolating a photographic subject is not easy, especially in the face of messy backgrounds. But Photos does a surprisingly good job for a new feature in a beta operating system.
Package tracking
Apple is incorporating package tracking into the Wallet app in iOS 16. Displays detailed reception and tracking information directly to orders.
Like the rest of Apple Pay, these are delivered securely and privately to your device. It works with e-commerce platforms like Shopify and other merchants with any purchase made with Apple Pay.
Order tracking in Apple Wallet
Delivery apps are already at risk, and Appleās move strengthens grip. On April 5, Mike Piontek wrote about the future of Deliveries, a package tracker.
The blog says the company, JuneCloud, can no longer maintain the same level of service. Companies like Amazon are restricting access to data and many more services will not be shown directly to Deliveries.
Instead, users will need to tap the “View Online” button within the app to view tracking data on the shipping company’s website.
Mail updates aren’t as big as Apple says they are. However, they bring the app to parity with other email apps. Functions such as scheduling emails, canceling emails, and reminders to open an email later are three new reasons to keep email as default.

Mail can also intelligently detect missing items in an email, such as an attachment or a recipient with cc. If a person forgot to reply, the system will send an automatic suggestion later.
Search
Spotlight has more capabilities to stay ahead or online with competitors like Alred and LaunchBar.
Users can now find images from their photo library, on the system and on the web. Photo Search works by location, scenes, objects, and people. Live Text allows your Mac owner to search for text within images.
A productive update allows people to act on Spotlight. The tool will create a new document, run a shortcut, or start a timer.
Finally, Spotlight includes rich results for movies, actors, artists, TV shows, business, and sports. Some competitors stay ahead of Spotlight, but Apple took it a few steps closer.
Window management
Stage Manager is a new way to manage and organize apps and windows on macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16. The current window is shown in the center and other workspaces are on the left.

Alternative window management applications such as Mosaic and Moom may still have advantages. Apple’s macOS may display windows side by side, but competitors support other settings.
Video conferencing
An example of how Apple products work together is a FaceTime update.
Items can be dragged and dropped across workspaces and the system will remember the position of each window relative to the others. People can use Handoff to transfer live video calls between devices.
While not a complete Sherlocking feature, this is a feature that other video conferencing applications do not have. Makes FaceTime much more attractive to users.
What Apple should have killed
A revamped 13-inch MacBook Pro was one of the new laptops that Apple announced contained an M2 chip. It also still contains the Touch Bar, a controversial feature with calls for its demise. The 14-inch and 16-inch models have already ruled it out.
Apple introduced the Touch Bar in 2016, a thin OLED strip that sits on top of the keyboard and replaces function keys. Offers touch capabilities and displays function keys, application controls, multimedia controls, and more.
But some users said it had no purpose and many application makers did not support it.
Apple will inevitably compete with developers and other third parties, as the company strives to perfect the all-in-one experience.
