Found one of the two missing men who spent the winter in the Yukon Desert

One of the two Yukon men reported missing earlier this month has been found while the other remains missing, according to the Yukon RCMP.

In a press release on Saturday, police said Mitchell Fichten was found alive after several days of research by the Yukon RCMP, conservation agents and Capital Helicopters.

Evan Russell is still missing.

The two men were reported missing by their families on June 14. They hadn’t known each other since October 2021, when they both left Faro, Yukon, to spend the winter in the Yukon Desert.

Police are still looking for Evan Russell, seen here with and without a beard. Russell and Mitchell Fichten had planned to spend the winter in the Yukon Desert. The RCMP said on Saturday that Fichten was found alive in a remote area. (Yukon RCMP)

According to the press release, Fichten was in a remote region and is now receiving medical attention.

“Police are asking other people not to attend areas where searches are known to be taking place,” the press release says.

“The authorities involved in the search have the resources and experience to continue to follow in Mr. Russell’s pursuit of research.”
