GBHU will conduct COVID-19 vaccine clinics in numerous communities this summer

The Gray Bruce Health Unit is hosting several COVID-19 vaccination clinics this summer.

A GBHU statement says the aim of the clinics is to help residents stay up to date with their virus vaccines, with vaccines proving to be the most effective tool in preventing serious illness or death. In addition to hosting clinics within communities, public health authorities are once again collaborating with GO-VAXX mobile clinics to reach rural areas with lower vaccine adoption in Gray and Bruce counties.

The GBHU also shared the following in the statement:

For people ages 12 to 59, staying up to date means receiving a series of primary vaccines and a booster dose. A second reinforcement is recommended for people 60 years of age or older, indigenous adults, and non-indigenous adult household members and residents of long-term care homes and other congregated care settings.

Due to the recommended dose intervals, thousands of Gray-Bruce residents aged 60 and over will be eligible in July and August to receive their second booster. More information on vaccine recommendations, including children ages five to 11, and intervals, is available here.

Evidence shows that boosters can help increase antibody levels that decrease over time after the second dose. Although a primary series of an mRNA vaccine generally maintains good efficacy against severe outcomes, reinforcement further increases vaccine efficacy by more than 90% against severe outcomes.
