The Green Party has set its sights on the Parry Sound-Muskoka assembly, increasing resources as early polls put the party in a tight race to win a seat at Queen’s Park.
Five-time Green Party candidate Matt Richter says the party has been gaining momentum with each election.
“Having the support of the Green Party will help us to overcome ourselves and make the imagination of this cavalcade green. From imagination to reality.”
Federal MP Elizabeth May arrived in British Columbia on Friday to show her support.
“There’s a lot of volunteer energy that has come here, like me, to come forward to tell and encourage Parry Sound-Muskoka voters to make history,” says May, noting her own success in winning a seat in parliament. “I defeated 2011 and was the first green chosen in Canada.”
Traditionally, the rural country has been blue, but political analyst Michael Johns says the Green Party’s focus on its final game could be beneficial.
“For the Green Party, its goal is to go from having a seat to two and becoming a consolidated party in the legislature.”
He points out that the Greens are making a smart move at Parry Sound-Muskoka.
“In the last week of the campaign, if your goal is not to win the election, but to win another seat, then yes, throw everything you can into the seat that gives you the best opportunities.”
Richter is running against New Democrat Erin Horvath, Conservative Graydon Smith, Andrew John Cocks with the Ontario party, Doug Maynard with New Blue, independent Daniel Predie Jr. and Brad Waddell with Populist Ontario.
The Liberal Party has no candidate in the constituency.
