Earlier this month, Pixel fans received a preview of the company’s entire 2022 line, from this year’s Pixel 7 to next year’s Pixel Tablet. The missing device, however, was the “Pixel Notepad”. It looks like Google has decided to back the Pixel Folding Notepad again.
Elec reports that Google has delayed the “Pixel Notepad” – the name we first reported earlier this year – for the second time. The change in business plans probably means that the device will not be launched in the fourth quarter of 2022, as we learned earlier. This report backs up the initially planned timeline and states that Google initially planned to show the device in late 2021.
According to sources familiar with the device, the reason for this delay in the “Pixel Notepad” may be that it did not meet expectations. Earlier rumors claimed that Google’s device was lagging behind Samsung’s Fold series.
Pixel Notepad, as long as it escapes delays, will be Google’s first foldable smartphone. The device is expected to have a similar form factor to the Oppo Find N, with a compact exterior display but a large, wide interior display. The exterior display is expected to be a 5.78-inch panel with a 7.57-inch interior display with ultra-thin glass. As previously reported, the device will use a Tensor chip, although the latter delay probably means that at least the second-generation Tensor processor will be used. We also found evidence that the device will use approximately the same array of cameras as the Pixel 6a.

“Pixel Notepad” is a product that I’m personally excited about. Folders present a whole new world of possibilities for our handheld computers. But I’m glad Google isn’t in a hurry to join this market.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the one I currently carry alongside my Pixel 6 Pro, and even with Samsung’s level of experience, the folds aren’t perfect. A year after the release of Fold, my personal drive has accumulated a bit of dirt on the hinge that makes it not as smooth as before. In addition, there are still durability issues with the folds that have not yet been resolved. With Google’s erratic track record in customer service, which, thanks to the company, is improving, I’m not sure I want to use something as fragile as a folding one. But we’ll just have to wait and see for now. Google clearly has a lot of support for Pixel right now, so a fold will arrive at some point. More time in the oven seems like a good plan to me.
