Here’s how to hit the XP wall “Diablo Immortal” and how to overcome it

Immortal Devil

Snowstorm

If you’ve been playing Diablo Immortal for the last day or two, you’ve probably noticed that you’re having a good time. So many levels and skills unlocked! As set up, it’s easy to get to level 20, 25 or even 30 in just a handful of game sessions.

But in the end … you’ll hit the wall. The good old wall of “mobile games” and something that is not present in past Diablo games.

This is where the leveling slows down to a crawl and you have to be much more … oriented in terms of how you progress. And no, that’s not a euphemism for something else.

You may find a mini wall around 31-32, as this is the first time you will be asked to reach a specific level, 35 to do the Zoltan Kule quest. But once you do that and finish this mission in 15 minutes, you probably won’t reach level 36 with another goal of reaching 40 before the story progresses. This is the “wall” and I’ve heard it gets worse after 40.

So what are you supposed to be doing?

By far, the biggest means of progressing the game is to level up the battle step. Each level will give you virtually a full level of XP. Yes, this means the free pass that everyone has, not just the paid version with extra rewards.

To level up the battle pass, you’ll see a list of objectives that give you points for new levels. This is essentially what you are supposed to do, a combination of:

  • Rewards, where there are eight available per day. They’re terminally boring and things like “kill 50 spiders in the dark forest”. But they themselves give XP and progress with the battle pass if you do a lot of it.
  • Challenge and Elder Rifts. The main form of monetization of the game is the sale of “ridges” that increase Rifts’ rewards for dropping legendary gems. Think of it as a loot box that you have to play through a level to open. Yes, I don’t love it. But running cracks of any kind will allow you to get XP from the same race.
  • Dungeons, which are story missions you’ve already run. These can be run as a group or solo, and will give you XP and loot and the specifics will advance the battle pass.

This is all a bit confusing because the game just … totally changes at this point. Before that, you were just advancing through the story like a normal Diablo game, but that slowdown happens and then it’s not clear what to do. Essentially, the game wants you to log in daily, do a variety of things, level up the battle pass, and play the story in pieces from here to level 60, the maximum. We’ll see if this has a long-term appeal to players or not. I hope this has helped.
