The July 4 parade in Highland Park came to a sudden halt when shots were fired about 10 minutes after the parade began at 10 a.m. Monday, sending hundreds of people running for safety.
As they fled the parade route on Central Street in downtown Highland Park, parade attendees left chairs, prams and blankets as they sought refuge, not knowing what happened.
Several witnesses said they heard several shots fired.
Several people were shot. A journalist saw five people bleeding. A blanket covered a person.
Police are patrolling the area with rifles.
