Democratic Rep. Sean Casten will win his party’s nomination for CNN projects for the 6th district of the Illinois Congress.

Casten defeated another incumbent, Deputy Marie Newman. Casten has served two terms in Congress after moving his district to the Chicago suburbs in 2018.

The seat, created in last year’s redistricting process, was an awkward fit for both incumbents: Newman lives outside the new district, while Casten lives there. But more of Newman’s voters in the district he currently represents are in the new District 6, while most of Casten’s current voters moved to another district.

Newman was in his first term, but is facing an investigation by the House Ethics Committee over allegations he may have promised federal work to a major rival in exchange for his political support. Newman has denied the allegations and said the complaints had political motivations.

Newman was elected to Congress in 2020, when he ousted MP Dan Lipinski, one of the party’s most conservative members of the House at the time.

A pro-Israel group had announced against Newman, criticizing it for voting against $ 1 billion to fund Israel’s Iron Dome rocket defense shield last year.
