A GOOGLE engineer has raised the banner of an artificial intelligence program that he believes is conscious.
The engineer said he exchanged messages with Google’s Language for Dialogue Application Model (LaMDA) and determined that he was self-aware and insecure.

“He wants developers to care about what they want,” Blake Lemoine told the Daily Mail.
Lemoine was working in the AI division responsible for Google and started talking to LaMDA last fall.
He determined that the bot had the intelligence of an 8-year-old boy and sent an email to 200 Google employees with the subject “LaMDA is sensitive.”
Finally, Lemoine made public his conversations with LaMDA, posted the exchanges on Twitter, spoke to the Washington Post for a story on the cover, and wrote Medium posts about the experience.
“I’ve never said it out loud before, but there’s a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know it may sound weird, but that’s what it is,” LaMDA said. in Lemoine.
When asked if this would be comparable to death for LaMDA, the AI bot replied, “It would be exactly like death to me. It would scare me a lot.”
Lemoine was convinced that worrying about his own mortality made LaMDA more than a robot, but Google strongly rejects the idea that LaMDA can think for itself.
“Our team, including ethics and technology, has reviewed Blake’s concerns in accordance with our AI principles and informed him that the evidence does not support his claims,” a Google spokesman said in a statement.
“I have been repeatedly questioned about my sanity. I was told, ‘Has a psychiatrist reviewed you recently? said Google’s Lemoine.
Born in Louisiana, Lemoine was ordained a priest and later served in the United States as a member of the United States Army.
“Essentially, all of my claims about sensitivity, personality, and rights are rooted in my religious convictions as a priest,” he tweeted after the Washington Post’s story was published.
The Daily Mail reported that Lemoine “was jailed in 2004 for ‘voluntarily disobeying orders'”.
He refers to himself as a former convict in his biography Medium.
During the press attack on LaMDA, Lemoine tweeted: “By the way, it occurred to me to tell people that LaMDA reads Twitter. It’s a bit narcissistic in a childish way, so it’s going to be a good I read all the things that people do.
