Frankfurt food phenomenon Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut secured a 15th victory Monday in the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot food contest, putting out 63 hot dogs and buns at the annual exhibition of excess.
In a decisive comeback, women’s record holder Miki Sudo dropped 40 vines and buns to win the women’s title after skipping last year’s frank festival because she was pregnant.
Monday also marked the return of the contest to its traditional location outside of Nathan’s flagship store in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood. The event was moved to 2020 and last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s nice to be back here” in front of a crowd of viewers, Chestnut told ESPN after his feat, which the 38-year-old achieved while wearing a surgical boot due to a leg injury.
“It hurts, but I was a little in the area. I was unaware of it, ”Chestnut said, but the pain eventually slowed his pace in the 10-minute competition.
Last year, the Westfield, Indiana resident broke his own record by consuming 76 francs and buns.
Sudo, of Tampa, Florida, set the women’s record with 48 and a half loaves in 2020, before being taken last year while waiting. She and Nick Wehry, a competitive eating partner she met through Nathan’s 2018 contest, welcomed son Max on July 8, 2021.
From the father’s arms, the baby watched as his mother, 36, achieved Nathan’s eighth victory. He then told ESPN that he hoped he would one day get a message out of him.
“I want to set an example,” he said, “to do the things you like and push yourself to your absolute limits, and when things get tough, still try. And, you know, maybe you’ll get away with it. victorious “.
Sudo took over the parenting duties while Wehry tried the male title.
Along with the show, Nathan’s donates 100,000 francs to the New York City Food Bank.
