iPadOS 16 brought a handful of new features, but especially for iPad M1 users. If you want to know how to get the most out of your next operating system and whether it’s worth upgrading to an iPad Air M1 or an iPad Pro M1, here are its exclusive features on iPadOS 16.
Stage Manager as the protagonist of iPadOS 16 and M1 users
Stage Manager will be available exclusively for the M1 iPad Air and M1 iPad Pro. Here’s what you can do with this iPad 16 feature:
- Resizable windows: resize your windows so that they are the perfect size for your task;
- Central application: Focus on the application you are working with without going to full screen;
- Quick access to windows and applications: The windows of the applications you are working on are prominently displayed in the center, and other applications are arranged on the left side in order of recent use;
- Overlay windows: Create overlay windows of different sizes in a single view, giving you control to organize your ideal workspace;
- Group applications: Drag and drop windows from the side, or open applications from the Dock to create sets of applications that you can always return to.
External display support for iPad M1 users with iPadOS 16
Another important feature that reaches iPad M1 users with iPadOS 16 is the ability to have adequate support for the external display.
As Apple explains, full external display support comes to the iPad Pro with the M1 chip with resolutions up to 6K, which means you can work with different applications on your iPad and external display. With iPadOS 16, you can also:
- Access applications on the external display: Access your favorite and recently used applications from the Dock, or use the application library to find the application you want faster;
- Drag and drop between iPad and external display: iPad M1 users with iPadOS 16 can drag and drop files and windows from their iPad Pro to the external display, and vice versa.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro M1 has its own exclusive feature on iPadOS 16
Even if you have an iPad M1, that doesn’t mean you’ll have all the features available on iPadOS 16, as Apple saved a feature on the larger iPad with new display modes:
- Reference Mode: Allows the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display to provide reference color for popular color standards and video formats;
- Sidecar Reference Mode: Use the iPad Pro as a secondary reference screen for your Mac.
The iPad Pro 2020 and the iPad Air 4 can also have their moment of prominence
For iPad Pro 2020 or later users only, there is an exclusive accessibility feature with Magnifier on iPadOS 16:
- Magnifier Detection Mode: Get rich descriptions of your surroundings with a new Magnifier mode that contains Door Detection, People Detection, and Image Descriptions;
- Detecting doors with a magnifying glass: Locate a door, read the signs or labels around it, and get instructions on how to open it.
Last but not least, if you have an iPad Air 4 with 256GB of storage or an iPad Pro M1, you can take advantage of this feature on iPadOS 16:
- Virtual Memory Swap: iPad storage can be used to expand the memory available for all applications and offers up to 16 gigabytes of memory for the most demanding applications.
