Martin Talbot, CEO of Official Charts Company, said: “It’s been great to see iconic Kate Bush on the official singles chart with Running Up That Hill, and to see her break a record number of business records.
“The way a new generation of music fans have brought their classical song to the heart really consolidates Kate’s position as the greatest of all time, if need be.”
Broken records
Becoming the number one female singer to reach number one in the UK, Bush has broken the record held by Cher, who was 52 when she hit Believe in 1998.
The distance of decades between Bush’s successes surpasses the record set by Sir Tom Jones’ 42-year split between Green Green Grass of Home (1966) and the benefit single (Barry) Islands in the Stream (2009).
Running Up That Hill appeared in Stranger Things, a series set in the 1980s, for a scene in which one of the characters is seen escaping the sounds of Bush’s song.
