Liberals lose 5-year deadline for UN peacekeeping pledge, give themselves another year

The Liberal government is giving itself more time to fulfill a key UN peacekeeping pledge first made five years ago.

The commitment involves the provision of a rapid reaction force of 200 troops to the UN.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first announced the pledge during a major peacekeeping summit in Vancouver in 2017.

The government at the time said the force, intended to respond to emergencies in peacekeeping missions, would be deployed within five years.

However, the Department of National Defense says the cabinet recently gave itself an extra year to meet the commitment.

The government has not explained why the force has yet to materialize despite the UN saying there is an ongoing need for such units.
