LIVE: Met office storm warning for Devon and Cornwall

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for storms in the southwest. The Exeter-based forecaster has said we should expect “an area of thunderstorms” with the alert from 2.51pm this afternoon, June 18, until 7pm.

The warning means disruptions throughout the region in the next few hours. The Met Office says we should expect “short-term energy loss or other utilities” and “possibly some damage to some buildings / structures”.

An update from the Meteorological Office says: “A storm zone is expected to move north-east to south-west and south of England on Saturday afternoon. These may bring frequent lightning to places during a short period of time before they clear to the northeast.

“A brief period of heavy rain is also likely, but given the speed of movement, lightning is believed to be more likely to be a danger. The most frequent lightning is likely to be in parts of Cornwall and Devon.”

Affected areas include Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, North Somerset, Plymouth, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Torbay, Wiltshire and Hampshire.
