Update at 7:45: The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service stated in a news release that when officers arrived at the scene, an injured person was found in the roadway and taken to the hospital.
“During the initial investigation it was determined that the individual was assaulted,” the statement said. “Officers are actively investigating and remain on scene as this is an active incident.”
Original information: Witnesses say they heard gunshots and screams around 5 a.m. Friday.
A number of residents were on Goulais Avenue observing a heavy police and fire presence. First responders focused on a large house that had sustained fire damage. A ladder could be seen going up to the upper window.
Firefighters were in and out of the building and appeared to be trying to revive someone at the scene. An ambulance and a police car left around 6:30 am
Two witnesses at the scene said they had moved to the Sault from Toronto two days ago. They said they hoped to find some peace and quiet.
