Romano also confirms that English clubs were interested in signing the 22-year-old, but his preference was to work with Dutch coach Peter Bosz.

Erik Ten Hag is believed to be a big fan of Malaysia and was on the transfer list of the new United coach.

If in fact Ten Hag wanted to bring Malacia to the club, the 15 million euro fee should not have been a problem for United’s hierarchy.

Malaysia’s play represents another missed opportunity for United.

With just a couple of preseason weeks, fears are growing that United will not have the much-needed reinforcements needed by the entire squad.

The noise coming out of the club is calm; there is the belief that agreements will be made and will be made on United’s terms, something that has not happened in the past.

While the new approach of not throwing money at shirt sellers without any real plan or strategy is the right one, it is clear that United are still behind the rest when it comes to negotiating.

United football director John Murtough is said to be working from 6am to 10pm on transfers, but the club has yet to get anyone through the door.

It has certainly been a slower start to the window than United fans expected.

Especially after seeing rivals flex their muscles, he highlights United’s obvious struggles when it comes to negotiating with the transfer market.

There have been no comments from Ten Hag yet, but one can’t help but feel that the new boss will share the frustration of fans over the lack of business and see another potential goal stand in the way.
