Ilya Samsonov was an RFA who was not qualified by the Washington Capitals, who is expected to sign Darcy Kuemper. That makes it UFA today at noon.
Samsonov is 25 years old, he was drafted by the Capitals in 2015 22nd overall. That means the Leafs will have a goalie with a first-round pick. He is originally from Magnitogorsk, the same city as the newly selected Nikita Grebenkin. He is also represented by the same agency as Dennis Hildeby.
Samsonov hasn’t worked as a starter as the Capitals expected, but he has 89 games played in the NHL and 41 in the AHL. His career numbers show him as a goalkeeper who doesn’t quite get the expected% savings, but he’s close enough, you’ll feel comfortable with him as a substitute. It is little different from Adin Hill or Kaapo Kahkonen in this respect.
