Kherson is across the Dnipro River from its supply lines, which run from Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014.
Using Western-supplied long-range artillery, Ukraine has been pounding the main Antonovsky Bridge across the Dnipro River, a nearby railway bridge and a subsidiary road bridge in the town of Nova Kakhovka.
The Ministry of Defense confirmed that leaked photos this week showing the bridges badly damaged were real and that Russian forces had only been able to make “superficial repairs”.
“Even if Russia manages to make major repairs to the bridges, they will remain a key vulnerability,” he said.
And on Facebook, Sergey Khlan, an adviser to the Ukrainian governor of Kherson, mocked Russia for the destruction of the bridges.
“The last bridge that could transport Russian equipment and ammunition is gone,” he said. “The enemy’s logistics are broken.”
