Nintendo has just bought its own animation studio

Nintendo’s surprise collaboration with Illumination to create a new Super Mario animated film a few years ago marked a major change for a game publisher who, for the most part, has been reluctant to bring his gaming icons to other media after a blast of ties in the 90s. Now, that could be about to change.

The Verge reports that Nintendo has acquired production house CG Dynamo Pictures, with the intention of renaming it Nintendo Pictures. Dynamo has largely provided support work on several video games, including recently motion capture work on Catherine: Full Body and Persona 5 by Atlus, the big supernatural role-playing franchise that Sega recently confirmed it now wants to turn into programs. and movies beyond his. countless anime adaptations, and Death Stranding from Kojima Production, as well as media projects like Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance and several episodes of the LGBTQ sports anime Yuri !!! On ice.

It’s a big step forward for Nintendo to have the potential to develop its own animated content internally. The deal with Illumination for the Chris-Pratt-starring Mario movie, as well as Nintendo’s live-action Pokémon live action film Detective Pikachu, in 2019 were already big steps forward for a company that, despite eons of rumors about projects set in the worlds of Metroid, The Legend of Zelda and other Nintendo badges, remained largely out of the 21st century adaptation game. It wasn’t always like that, as Nintendo exploded into the gaming domain in the 90’s with NES, SNES and finally Nintendo 64, so with that came a series of cartoons and related movies, from the classic Super Mario and Zelda. cartoon or Captain N: The Game Master, or, of course, the famous 1993 Super Mario Bros. live action film.

Could we see a similar explosion on the horizon? We’ll just have to wait and see Nintendo’s plans for Nintendo Pictures.
