No Man’s Sky’s new expedition makes her a roguelike

Today, No Man’s Sky launches Leviathan, the game’s newest expedition that offers perhaps the most exciting gaming experience to date.

In the Leviathan release trailer, a mysterious message splashes across the screen telling the player that “death is not the end” and that he must “get back in the loop.” If you think this language sounds a little silly (heh), you’re right. At Leviathan, Hello Games puts some Returnal chocolate in No Man’s Sky peanut butter.

In Leviathan, death restores a traveler’s individual progress, forcing him to begin anew with a newly generated charge. However, as the community lives, dies, and repeats itself, it feeds on a goal of global progress that gives players higher quality items with each new life. Only through this shared progress can the community hope to get out of the cycle of death.

Along the way, players learn about the titular Leviathan and earn rewards along with something the community has long been claiming: a space whale.

The ultimate reward for Leviathan is a flying cetacean, cthulian, which is the first “living frigate” in the game, and I want one.
