Spencer Webb, in the tight end of Oregon, died Wednesday in an apparent diving accident near Eugene, where the university is located. He was 22 years old.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday night an accidental death from diving. The post did not mention Webb, but his former high school coaches confirmed the young player’s death at the Sacramento Bee.
Webb was in the midst of preparing for his fourth season in Oregon.

“The Lane County Sheriff’s Office responded to the rock slides a short distance west of Lake Triangle at approximately 2:30 p.m. after receiving the report of an injured person,” officials wrote in Facebook. “Upon arrival, officers learned that a 22-year-old man recreating himself in the area fell and hit his head. Spectators and paramedics who responded could not resuscitate him. Search and rescue staff of the Lane County Sheriff responded to help him get him back on the road.he was about 100 feet down a steep path.

“There is no evidence of foul play and his death appears to be accidental. The victim’s name is being withheld at this time pending notification from relatives.”

Ducks football coach Dan Lanning directed the tributes on social media and wrote “So full of life at every moment of the day. Your smile and energy will miss Spencer.”

Webb played in 11 games with Oregon last season and was to be the starting tight end with new head coach Lanning. He had 13 catches for 87 yards and one touchdown. In 2019, he had 18 catches for 209 yards and three touchdowns in nine games.
