President Joe Biden praised senators for coming up with a bipartisan framework on arms security and urged Congress to pass it on Sunday, but also said the bill may not be enough on its own.
Biden released his reaction to the frame Sunday afternoon, hours after Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Ct., Released a outline of an arms security package that Republicans would be willing to support.
“I want to thank Senator Chris Murphy and members of his bipartisan group, especially Senators Cornyn, Sinema and Tillis, for their tireless work in producing this proposal,” Biden wrote.
“Obviously, it doesn’t do everything I think is necessary, but it reflects important steps in the right direction and would be the most important arms security legislation passed in Congress in decades,” Biden continued.

The framework calls for legislation to eliminate straw-buying firearms, support statewide crisis response orders; funding mental health resources for children and families; improve the protection of victims of domestic violence and increase funding for school safety and mental health initiatives.

Ten Republican senators signed the framework, the number needed to pass legislation over any possible obstruction.

Biden’s statement comes more than a week after Murphy called for the president to stay out of negotiationssaying that Congress “must do it ourselves.”

He went on to suggest that Democrats are willing to compromise if that means Republicans would be willing to pass meaningful gun reform legislation.
“We will not put a law on the table banning assault weapons or passing a thorough background check,” Murphy told CNN. “Right now, the people of this country want us to move forward, they just don’t want the status quo to continue for another 30 years.”
