Researchers and famous boot manufacturer developing “smart boot” for healthcare workers

A renowned Australian boot manufacturer is working with researchers at Monash University to develop a “smart boot” for healthcare workers.

The smart boot includes sensors that can detect if users are at risk for injury while working in the rooms.

SensiLab of Monash University designed the shoe in collaboration with the famous Australian footwear manufacturer Blundstone.

Emergency department nurse and researcher Lisa Kuhn said it was incredibly important to have proper footwear at work.

“Resistance is a massive problem for us, especially in emergencies and such areas,” he said.

“Endurance is a huge problem for us. We can do up to five or six miles in a turn.”

The shoe prototype is lightweight, resistant to bacteria and is equipped with sensors to monitor the health of medical staff.

The boot is designed to send alerts to the user when he is at risk of injury.

“The shoe measures pressure points through the shoe as you walk and also changes temperature,” said Monash University industrial designer Dr. Rowan Page.

“We’ve used some materials that are really new to Blundstone. They look like leather but they’re not.”

Blundstone joint executive director Adam Blunt said that while the company had a reputation for making durable boots, its footwear was also designed with safety in mind.

“There’s an opportunity to try to solve something here and look at an industry, but everything we learn by looking at that industry, it will be applicable to so many other industries where people spend their whole lives standing up,” he said.

“Monash was one of them. We got along really well, we teamed up really well and so we were able to see that, this opportunity in front of us to work more deeply together.”

There is a prototype but the footwear is not yet ready to hit the market.
