The owner of a Greek restaurant accused of hitting tourists with exorbitant bills for drinks or snacks is fighting to defend his ‘honour’.
DK Oyster hit the headlines this week after a Canadian couple on their honeymoon said they were charged €400 (£335) for a beer, an Aperol spritz and a dozen oysters.
Lindsay Breen and her husband Alex said staff had not shown them a drink menu with prices and kept trying to bring things to their table that they hadn’t ordered.
A quick look at TripAdvisor will show many one-star reviews from disgruntled customers with similar complaints.
Mykonos oyster bar owner Dimitrios Kalamaras has finally broken his silence and defended his prices, boasting that they are simply “beyond the budget” of some of his visitors.
He hit back at Lindsay, claiming she was an “influencer looking to be famous” to highlight her stunning bill.
Dimitrios said that after “dozens” of similar “false” claims on TripAdvisor, staff refused to provide a menu with prices, deciding to place three blackboards at the entrance displaying them.

He also claims that customers should ask a manager to discuss the price before ordering and that it would be ‘ridiculous’ for him to explain the menu to every customer who walks in.
Dimitrios also says that “no sane adult” would order a drink without seeing the price first.
He says he has no intention of explaining why they charge more than a traditional supermarket or tavern, proclaiming that the “concept” of DK Oyster is completely different.
“Unfortunately, all of us who work in the hospitality industry have been approached by notorious ‘influencers’ who, instead of making a living by advertising products and services to their audience, lobby certain businesses for exorbitant commissions and free meals,” he said. to say. .
“At DK Oyster we have advertised in the ways we see fit for our restaurant and we will not succumb to the influencers who have been drawn to the beautiful island of Mykonos.”

Dimitrios said Lyndsay was “trying to get famous through Instagram posts,” even though she doesn’t appear to have much of an online presence.
He says that whenever he receives a complaint on TripAdvisor, he checks with the staff, adding: ‘They always assured me that they follow the rules.
“So I used TripAdvisor to encourage our guests to always navigate the menu and prices carefully.
“I can’t stop every person from walking into our facility and explaining the importance of this practice.

“Unfortunately, there are people on TripAdvisor who openly encourage guests to come, eat and drink whatever they want and then refuse to pay the bills.
“I understand that some people may find our prices beyond their budget and I fully respect their opinion, even if they do not appreciate the value of our services, cuisine, concept and experience.
Lindsay claimed Alex, a carpenter, was taken to a back room to pay and when he asked for a breakdown, he was shown a computer screen that was all in Greek.
The recruiter says her new husband settled the bill without arguing because he felt intimidated and just wanted out of here.
