McIlroy had every chance of winning a major fifth title, a second U.S. Open of his career and the first major victory in eight years over the weekend, but unfortunately he was unable to have any real momentum at Brookline.
Every time he did birdie in the final round, he seemed to follow it with a bogey and despite a mini fight in the closing holes. Ultimately, it was a case of too little too late for McIlroy, as he scored a 69 to finish 2 under par for the championship.
Fitzpatrick becomes the fourth English winner of the U.S. Open in the last 100 years, joining Cyril Walker (1924), Tony Jacklin (1970) and Justin Rose (2013).
He also joins the great Jack Nicklaus as the only other player in the men’s game to have won the U.S. Open and the U.S. amateur at the same golf course.
Fitzpatrick won the 2013 U.S. Amateur and the 2022 U.S. Open at the Brookline Country Club, while Nicklaus won the 1961 U.S. Amateur and the 1972 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
