A 49-year-old woman is lucky to have escaped with life-threatening injuries after her SUV collapsed over an overpass on Highway 1 in Burnaby on Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to the Grandview exit ramp around 8:15 p.m. to report a single-vehicle crash, according to fire chief Darcy Robinson.

At the scene, they found a shattered SUV in the grassy middle of the middle of the Trans Canada Highway.

“The vehicle had passed through the railing nose first down the freeway down to the grass median and then back to the tires,” Robinson said.

Firefighters did not need to release the driver, she said, but she was taken to hospital with a broken arm.

“The girl is very lucky,” Robinson said.

Eastbound traffic on the freeway was reduced for a while as crews closed all eastbound lanes to clear the crash.

Burnaby RCMP is investigating the cause of the crash. They do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors, but they have not ruled out that speed or rain may have contributed to the incident.
