The Elden Ring studio FromSoftware has a new game in the “final stages” of development

You might think that after posting a massive magic piece like Elden Ring (opens in a new tab), FromSoftware might be inclined to take a year or two (or three) off. But apparently not, because the director of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, recently told the Japanese site 4Gamer (opens in a new tab) (via Gematsu (opens in a new tab)) that the The studio’s next game is in the “final stages” of development.

The statement came in response to a question about a 2018 interview (opens in a new tab) in which Miyazaki said two of the “3.5” games the studio was working on had not yet been announced: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was third, while PSVR’s exclusive Déraciné accounted for the 0.5 game. One of the unannounced games was Elden Ring, while the other remains unannounced, but it may see the light of day soon.

“Development is currently in the final stages,” Miyazaki said.

While it offered no clue as to what this game might be, a persistent rumor is that FromSoft is working on a new Armored Core game (opens in a new tab). In January, an alleged consumer survey indicated that Miyazaki was leading a new entry in the series, while the leaked screens later suggested that development was quite advanced.

Aside from this project, whatever it is, Miyazaki has apparently already started working on his next game, and is also thinking even further: in the “medium or long term,” he said he would like to “work on a fantasy more abstract than anything we’ve done in the past, ”which is a wild thing to imagine considering the dreamlike journey through heaven and hell that is Elden Ring.

However, it’s hard to argue with reason: Miyakazi explained that during the development of previous FromSoft games, including Elden Ring, all sorts of interesting “ideas and images” were left on the floor of the species room because they simply didn’t they were suitable for the project we currently have, and would like to do something with them.

Miyazaki isn’t the only one with things at FromSoftware: “We’re developing several different director titles than me, in addition to the titles I’m directing, but we’re not at the stage where I can share any of them. Details yet.” he said. And thankfully, he also assured Elden Ring fans that updates will continue to circulate, though I’m sorry to say (though not (opens in a new tab)) that there’s still no sign of any DLC or expansion.
