The Halton region has reported its first case of monkeypox virus, according to the local health doctor.
Authorities say the infected person is being isolated at home and all contacts have been reported by the health unit.
“While most people infected with monkeypox will have mild symptoms, some people, such as children, pregnant women and those with immunodeficiency, have a higher risk of serious illness,” said Dr. Hamidah Meghani in a statement.
“If you have symptoms of monkeypox, it’s important to stay home and call your doctor for evaluation. When you seek medical attention, you should wear a high-quality medical mask and cover all injuries.”
The disease is a rare disease that comes from the same family of viruses that cause smallpox, which the World Health Organization (WHO) declared eradicated worldwide in 1980.

Meghani said the virus can spread from person to person through respiratory secretions, direct contact with skin lesions and / or contact with materials contaminated with the virus, such as bedding and clothing.
