A teenager whose girlfriend was being harassed on a Melbourne tram has been “stabbed” after trying to intervene.

The 15-year-old boy and his girlfriend were traveling by tram to South Melbourne and headed to Southern Cross train station shortly after 9pm on 23 April.

When the tram arrived at a stop near Carrer Ferrars, two men got on and started harassing the young woman.

The boy was assaulted and beaten on the head repeatedly in front of terrified witnesses.

He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Police said one of the tram passengers who witnessed the brutal incident has been deeply affected.

When the tram stopped, the two men fled and now the police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
