THROGS NECK, Bronx (WABC) – A school bus carrying dozens of adults and no children crashed and overturned on Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx.
It passed before 6:15 a.m. Thursday on the ramp to Exit 1A from the Parkway heading north to Bruckner Boulevard heading west in the Throgs Neck section.
It appears the bus driver was unable to navigate the turn, lost control and overturned on the ramp.
The NewsCopter 7 video showed the bus on the side and a few adults lying on the grass near the bus.
A total of 37 adults – 36 passengers plus the driver – were on board at the time of the accident. There were no children on board.
Three of the passengers are hospitalized in serious condition.
Another 33 people were checked at the scene and then taken to hospitals in the area for evaluation. The driver denied medical attention.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams says the bus was carrying drivers for the city’s Summer Rising programs.
“Families should expect some bus routes this morning and afternoon to be delayed, and schools will be contacting families whose routes will be affected,” the mayor said in a statement . “Families suffering from delays should contact the transportation coordinator at their Summer Rising site or contact the DOE Student Transportation Office call center at 718-392-8855.” .
The bus company said it was able to cover half of the 34 routes affected by the crash and planned to double the remaining routes on Thursday morning.
The company said it hoped to be able to cover all the routes in the afternoon.
