Time for another Moebius-looking video game

Brilliant French artist Jean “Moebius” Giraud had one of the most recognizable art styles, and while his works have inspired video games for decades, including those in which he worked directly, few have been able to truly resemble one of his illustrations. come to life.

However, last year we had one, with the excellent Sable, and now we have another one called XTAL (you could also count on Pixeljunk Raiders if you feel generous). With a name that might make you think of a classic Aphex Twin track, its developers say that XTAL is “a sleek mix of action and exploration with a fast-paced combat system that combines TPS elements, Hack ‘n’ Slash and Bullet Hell with a vibrant artistic style inspired by French comics ”.

Yes, I know that Moebius is not the only artist with a “French comic” style, as he overlooks the influential work of people like Jean-Claude Mézières, but this is clearly going directly to the unique aspect of Moebius).

I apologize to anyone who has read this far and still reads it as “Morbius”, but it’s not my fault that the internet has brainwashed you.

Here is the game’s trailer, with a plot summed up like this: “A distant past resonates on the planet Syro, while its ruined landscapes are corrupted by a mysterious force. You, as a seeker, will use lost technology to engage in combat and explore a vast and evocative world.

It looks great! The game is being developed by True Colors, an independent studio based in Turin, Italy. Keep in mind that while this trailer looks awesome, the game is still very early in development. Still, to cater to everyone, they’ve been sharing a lot of progress work on their Twitter account, including my favorite type of pre-release content: conceptual art.

XTAL arrives on Steam … finally, while considering what I just said above, it’s no wonder there isn’t even a tentative release date to accompany its new Steam page.
