The storm is capable of producing a hail the size of a golf ball and heavy rain, with the potential to form a tornado.

Funnel clouds and at least two tornadoes have been detected this afternoon in the Sundre area. Photos posted on Twitter show a funnel cloud and a possible tornado near Bergen, about five kilometers south of Sundre around 3 p.m. A funnel cloud further east was also detected near Shantz, near Highway 22.

There are also tornado clocks in northern Calgary, even for the city of Red Deer, meaning conditions are favorable for the development of severe storms that can produce tornadoes.

The situation in southern Alberta is fluid, with clocks and warnings issued, which then fell.

In the event of a tornado, Environment Canada advises people to take refuge immediately if they hear a roar or see a funnel cloud, flying debris or any threatening weather approaching. Protecting yourself involves moving to a strong building if possible and going to the lowest floor, staying away from walls and exterior windows.

As a last resort, Environment Canada advises lying down and protecting your head from flying debris.

Calgary has been under a severe storm for most of the day.

The weather alert comes two days after a tornado struck near the village of Alliance, about 160 miles east of Red Deer.
