Two bodies recovered and 10 people rescued after a ship collided in Biscayne Bay, Florida

Miami Beach Coast Guard station crews and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter rescued 10 people and recovered a body of water, according to a Coast Guard statement Saturday.

Miami-Dade firefighters also recovered a body of water, according to the statement.

According to the statement, a person involved in the collision reported to the Coast Guard around 10:30 p.m. Friday, reporting 12 people in the water a mile west of Key Biscayne.

The collision occurred near the sandbank of Nixon Beach, according to Miami City Fire Department spokesman Lt. Pete Sanchez.

A rescue swimmer helped two critically injured survivors and moved one to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, which transported the survivor to Jackson Memorial Medical Center, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard crews transferred the remaining survivors to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, according to the statement.

“On behalf of the Coast Guard and our partner agencies, we would like to offer our sincere condolences to the families and friends who lost their loved ones,” the lieutenant commander said. Benjamin Tuxhorn, coordinator of the Miami Coast Guard Rescue Mission.

“The Coast Guard and our associated local agencies responded quickly and worked together extensively in this search and rescue case.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the crash.
