BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) – Latest US Open news (all local times):
7 p.m.
Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open, winning his first major in the same course where he won the U.S. amateur title nine years earlier.
Fitzpatrick shot a 2 under 68 at The Country Club to finish the tournament at 6 under 274 and beat Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler by one.
Leading by a shot, Fitzpatrick hooked his unit to number 18 in a bunker on the left side of the street. But he hit the middle of the green and made two puts from 18 feet for par. Zalatoris had a 14-foot birdie putt to tie, but missed it by a fraction.
That marked the second-place finish in a major for Zalatoris, who lost to Justin Thomas in a playoff last month in the PGA Championship. It was Zalatoris ’sixth top-10 in seven majors since making his major Winged Foot debut at the 2020 U.S. Open.
Fitzpatrick hit 17 greens in regulation. He becomes the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since Justin Rose at Merion in 2013, the same year Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Country Club fan.
He also joins Jack Nicklaus as the only player to have won both the U.S. Open and the amateur on the same course. Nicklaus won at Pebble Beach in 1961 and 1972.

Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick tied at the U.S. Open with four holes to finish Sunday in the final round
They headed to the 15th starting box at 5 under, a shot ahead of Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters Champion, was at the clubhouse with 3 under 277.
In the event of a tie, there will be a total playoff of two holes to decide the champion. The playoff holes are numbers 1 and 18.
Still ahead of the three leaders is the famous par-4 17 hole, a 375-yard dogleg that is played as the easiest hole at The Country Club in the final round. That’s where Frances Ouimet made a birdie to force a playoff that gave her historic victory at the 1913 U.S. Open. Justin Leonard sank a long putt to win the 1991 Ryder Cup.
Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick are looking for their first major after a close call-up last month at the PGA Championship. Fitzpatrick played the last pair on Sunday in the Southern Hills, while Zalatoris lost to Justin Thomas in a playoff.

Matt Fitzpatrick made the turn with a one-shot lead over Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler in what is shaping up to be a three-way race for the U.S. Open title in the final nine holes.
Fitzpatrick birdied at number 8 and pared at number 9 to turn 6 below par for the tournament. His bird arrived at the same time as Scheffler bogeyed at number 10 to fall to 5 below.
Zalatoris made an 18-foot putt for birdie at No. 9 to join Scheffler at 5 under.
Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama and Denny McCarthy are tied for fourth, four shots from Fitzpatrick.
Scheffler has already won four in the last four months and hopes to add that important title to the Masters Championship he won in April.
Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick, in the final group of The Country Club, each go for their first major title. Last month in the PGA Championship, Fitzpatrick played in the final pair, while Zalatoris lost to Justin Thomas in a playoff.

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler made four birdies over the nine forwards to make the turn with a one-shot lead in the final round of the U.S. Open.
The Masters champion made the turn in 4-under 31 and was 6 under for the tournament with nine holes to play. He was once ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick and twice ahead of Will Zalatoris, who paired up in the final duo of the day.
Scheffler is trying to become the first player to win the U.S. Masters and Open the same season since Jordan Spieth in 2015.
Scheffler’s lead seemed dangerous when his approach shot to the very sloping green on the eighth par-5 turned back from the green, almost again about 65 yards from the hole. But he went up and down to save the pair, then made another pair at 9 to turn 6 down.

Come back on Friday afternoon to find that Denny McCarthy needs a pair in the final hole to make the cut at the U.S. Open. And look at it now. McCarthy had a 68 in the third round, started Sunday with three birdies in five holes and is tied for fourth.
He has become the most unlikely contender for a star-studded ranking.
Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick set the pace. Scheffler had three birdies in four holes to give the Masters champion the lead. Fitzpatrick has been consistent as always and birdie at number 3 to tie Scheffler at 5 less.
Jon Rahm has all the parameters through four holes and is two behind. Rory McIlroy is up and down, three birds and two bogeys and three behind.

Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, made birds in the first two holes of the final round of the U.S. Open to tie for the lead.
Scheffler started the day at 2 under and two holes later had equalized Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick at min-4. The co-leaders of the night left at 2:45, so the whole field has started the final round at the Country Club.
Scheffler made a six-foot putt for birdie at No. 1 and a 15-foot putt at the second hole. He is the current champion of the Master and is looking for his second major victory of his career.

The USGA has returned with some historic pine placements for the final round of the U.S. Open
The governing body says the location of the left front hole at No. 17 Country Club is in the same location as when Francis Ouimet made a birdie in the final round of the 1913 tournament to force a playoff against British professional Harry Vardon and Ted Ray.
And hole 18 in the front right is where it was Sunday for the 1988 U.S. Open, when Curtis Strange paired from the front bunker to force a Monday playoff with Nick Faldo.
On Saturday, the 17th pin was in the same spot where Justin Leonard made a 45-foot birdie to win the Ryder Cup for the United States in 1999.
Hole 11 of par-3 is also getting some attention – it’s played at just 119 yards. That didn’t make it any easier. He was the eighth toughest at the start, with 10 bogeys and only three birdies in the first 26 players.

Guido Migliozzi has made a good start to the final round at the Country Club.
The Italian finished tied for fourth place last year in his US Open debut. Sunday was 3 under through 14 holes as he tried to overtake a 74 in the third round that dropped him to over-6 through 54 holes.
Second-round co-star Collin Morikawa caught a bird in the fourth hole and was down to 1 for the tournament. He is trying to recover from a third-round 77 that knocked him out of the standings.

Grayson Murray is spending a lot of time on television at the US Open, for all the wrong reasons.
Murray threw his putter after a quadruple bogey in the seventh hole at the Country Club. Then a plate was broken over the knee at number 10.
The 28-year-old from North Carolina missed the cut at his only other US Open in 2013. But it seems like playing on the weekend is no reason to celebrate.
Murray needed four attempts to get out of the rough behind the seventh hole on Sunday and then threw his putter into the high pistol when he came out of the green. After a pair at No. 8, he made a triple in the ninth hole.
When he lost the green with his approach to the ninth hole and broke the club above the knee.
Murray was over-9 for the fourth round and over-17 for the tournament. That left him tied with Harris English for last place.

The idea of a firm and fiery final round of the US Open has been erased.
Rain and temperatures began to fall overnight at the Country Club, leaving a time for the U.S. Open to feel like a sad day at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
There has not been enough rain accumulation to smooth the course. But the forecast was for clouds and temperatures barely reaching 60 degrees when Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick surrender to the final group.
Rain or shine, this US Open should be wide open. Defending champion Jon Rahm is a shot from behind. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is another rebound, as is New England favorite and former PGA champion Keegan Bradley.
There’s also a lot in the mix Rory McIlroy, who turned a tough Saturday into a 73 that kept the four-time major champion three shots from the lead.
