Victoria will abandon mandatory gas connections in new housing developments

The Victorian government will eliminate the mandate for gas connections to new developments in an attempt to move to renewable energy solutions.

Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced today that the state will eliminate mandatory gas connections for developers building new homes in favor of introducing more electricity options for homeowners.

It occurs when energy bills have skyrocketed in recent months due to gas and coal shortages, the war in Ukraine and a disparity in the speed of renewables being incorporated into the system.

“All electric homes can save thousands of dollars on bills,” D’Ambrosio said.

He added that a roadmap will be deployed for Victorians on gas replacement to guide residents on how to switch to appliances instead of gas to save on their bills.

The state plans to phase out all gas products by 2023.

“The roadmap describes how we will use energy efficiency, electrification, hydrogen and biogas to reduce bills and reduce carbon emissions,” a statement on the program said.

“It will help empower Victorian homes and businesses to adopt sustainable alternatives to fossil gas and improve access to an affordable, safe, reliable and secure energy supply.”

D’Ambrosio added that new incentives will also be included in the Victorian Energy Upgrades program to encourage residents to make the transition from gas appliances to electricity.

“People may be saving thousands of dollars if instead of living in a dueling fuel house it becomes electric,” he said.

He said these initiatives form the government’s transition to renewable energy sources.

The government says Victorian homes can save up to $ 1,020 a year on their energy bills through electrification and up to $ 1,250 if solar panels are installed.
