A powerful low-lying, high-surface surface system will bring huge amounts of rain over the next 48 hours to parts of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, with more than 100 mm locally no doubt for some areas. Rain warnings are in place, even for major cities like Calgary, with the threat of localized flooding through Wednesday. The rain is expected to intensify on Monday afternoon, intensifying throughout the day on Tuesday. MONDAY TO WEDNESDAY: HEAVY RAIN REQUESTS WARNINGS, THREATS OVER 100 MM AND LOCATED FLOOD
A low-pressure system will cross the border on Monday and meander through the central prairies for several days. This system will result in heavy rainfall in some areas, with the highest total rainfall likely to be directed at the foothills of southern Alberta.
“A combination of a slow motion system and sloping winds will increase the total rainfall in the foothills during this event, leading to the probability of rainfall totals exceeding 100 mm,” warns Kelly Sonnenburg, a meteorologist with The Weather Network. .
A rainstorm will spread from south to north through Alberta and Saskatchewan on Monday and Tuesday, causing locally heavy rain at times.

Calgary is expected to receive 100mm of rain with this system and Edmonton could see up to 50mm. Meteorologists recommend keeping an eye out for flood risk in some areas.
“Check with your municipality and the province of Alberta (rivers.alberta.ca) for the latest information and recommendations. Heavy rains can cause sudden flooding and water accumulation on roads. Flooding may occur. located in low-lying areas. Watch for possible leaks. near rivers, streams and sewers, “says Environment Canada and Climate Change (ECCC) in its Calgary Rain Warning.
East winds will provide an additional lift along the buttresses on Tuesday to further increase total rainfall. A deformation zone, or axis of heavy rainfall, is also expected to approach 100 mm in parts of central Saskatchewan.

There is still some uncertainty about where the highest rainfall totals will end, and some storms embedded within the system will also result in additional rainfall totals. Rainfall will begin to decrease from west to east through Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Wednesday.
The system will send temperatures well below seasonal temperatures by mid-June. After a seasonal weekend, daytime highs in Calgary will fall through mid-teens through the middle of the week.
Cooler temperatures will allow total snowfall to fall to higher altitudes, with locations above 1,200 meters at risk of seeing snow build up during the duration of the storm.
