Toronto lawyer and self-described satirical politician Caryma Sa’d was handcuffed by Hamilton police officers outside an Ontario PC Party campaign event featuring leader Doug Ford.
A video posted on Sa’d’s popular Twitter account @CarymaRules garnered more than 120,000 views in an hour and 40 minutes after being posted Thursday night. A Hamilton police office arrests Sa’d for entering and removes his phone, saying he had to hand over his property because he was being arrested. The event was held at John C. Munro Hamilton Airport.
“This is Hamilton’s police. Are you arresting me for … political dissent?” Sa’d said in a video posted Thursday at 6:31 p.m.
“Can she leave?” asked an off-camera man.
“No, he has had his chance,” an HPS official replied.

Sa’d has documented demonstrations against public health, government and science during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Freedom Convoy protests last winter that turned into a three-week illegal blockade in the center of ‘Ottawa. He has amassed about 33,800 followers on Twitter.
One of Ford’s adult children, Krista Haynes, supported the Freedom Convoy.
In another video shared by Sa’d on Thursday, a man orders him to say, “We know who you are, you’re everywhere.” He then asked for a written notice of admission and was told, “That’s not how it works.”

Ford, the Ontario PC Party is trying to win a second straight majority government in the June 2 Ontario election, had an event that began at 7:30 pm at Hamilton International Airport (9268 Airport Rd. ). A tweet from the acting prime minister’s account said admission was free.
“I can’t wait to see you there!” Ford’s account said.
I invite you, your family and friends to our #Hamilton demonstration for #GetItDone!
It’s Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 pm at Hamilton Airport at 9268 Airport Road. Admission is free.

The Ontario PC Party website for the Hamilton event says, “It is highly recommended that you RSVP.” In fact, Sa’d had a hard copy of a confirmation of the event log in hand.
“There was my name,” Sa’d told a male security guard. “We look forward to seeing you soon, sincerely Doug Ford.”
So far no one was able to send in the perfect solution, which is not strange. #onpoli #OntarioVotes #Hamilton #GetTheFordOut pic.twitter.com/zXGPoZ7s3H

Hamilton police said shortly before 9 p.m. that they “charged a 33-year-old woman with admission” and gave her a ticket. It is believed to be Sa’d. They said a protest was formed after Ford arrived at the airport around 5:30 p.m., and the woman was released after receiving a fine.
“An out-of-premises protest was subsequently formed and eventually moved to private property, blocking the road to the Cargojet facility,” HPS said. “Protesters were asked to leave the road. All individuals complied, but one individual refused to move and was arrested.
“The individual was moved out of the property and immediately released with a ticket to enter the property.”
The event was at Flamborough-Glanbrook Riding. Donna Skelly is running for re-election for the city’s rapidly urbanizing PCs. Allison Cillis (Ontario’s New Democratic Party) and Melisse Willems (Ontario’s Liberal Party) are the main rivals.
There have been cases during this security campaign working for Ford using physical force on protesters or journalists. The Hamilton Police Service also had a recent scandal involving the arrest of racialized social justice activists, whose charges were dropped months later.
In the first count, on Monday, a member of the Ford Security Detail got his hands on Global News reporter Sean O’Shea, who was interviewing Ford as he toured the site where a Category 2 tornado landed in Uxbridge.
On May 16, while Ford was escorted in a televised debate by Ontario leaders, one of his security services pushed a nurse from behind on the sidewalk. Several media outlets reported that the nurse suffered a brain injury (commonly referred to as concussion).
In Hamilton, there was outrage from the community last fall after HPS agents arrested six homeowners, five of whom are black, after protesting the removal of homeless people they had built. campsites in a city center park. The arrests took place on two different days: in the park on November 24 and in the vicinity of the Hamilton Central Police Station on November 26.
Numerous black community organizations called for a judicial investigation into the conduct of HPS agents in those days, while calling for the charges to be dropped. The Canadian Union of Public Employees – Ontario also increased the call signal.
The Hamilton Police Services Board refused to support the convening of a judicial investigation.
Charges against the six housing defenders were dropped on March 15.
Members of climate justice groups against the expansion also demonstrated at the event. The elected leadership of Hamilton and the Halton region have voted to freeze the urban boundaries of municipalities to preserve farmland that is essential for food security.
Why was the police there? Are you afraid of our peaceful protest over Ford’s desire to pave 50,000 acres in Ontario? #onpoli pic.twitter.com/p1ESepCDMm

The Ontario PC Party warned in March that it could refer Hamilton’s official housing plan to the Ontario Land Court to try to overturn it. Seklly referred to Hamilton’s plans as “anti-housing.” The Hamilton land that has been protected from development is within Flamborough-Glanbrook riding.
