After trying, and failing, to acquire the popular Discord chat platform for $ 10 billion, Microsoft has opted for the next best thing: directly integrating Discord’s voice chat capabilities into Xbox consoles.
The news reached the Xbox Blog on Wednesday and clarified that, for now, access to Discord would be exclusive to the optional “Xbox Insider” level of early, beta, and preview updates to the console’s operating system. This update is already happening in waves on Xbox Insiders today, and adds new tool information to the system’s “chat” sidebar: “Try Discord Voice on Xbox Today.”
Simplifying your life at Discord adds some complications
Since its debut in 2015, Discord has grown in popularity as a user-friendly chat platform for gaming on computers and smartphones. One of the main differentiators of a service like Slack, which has a similar look and feel, are Discord’s smart ties to existing gaming networks. The idea is that wherever you play a game, Discord can transmit this status to friends via API links from other platforms (“playing Stray on PlayStation”, “LFP on World of WarCraft”, “transmit a Peggle session 2 a Twitch “). Users can switch between direct messaging, game-specific text chat rooms, real-time voice channels, and even video sharing services to coordinate their upcoming online gaming sessions.
But what if you want to talk to your Discord voice chat friends while using a dedicated headset on an Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch? Until this week, you couldn’t do it directly on any console. The best bet was to find headphones that support simultaneous Bluetooth inputs, and then connect them to both the console and the smartphone loaded with Discord. (Alternatively, you can do what I do: put the headset on a smartphone to one ear for Discord, and then place the headset on a console. I don’t recommend it.)

Unfortunately, this week’s release of Discord on Xbox is a bit limited. The biggest problem is that there is no formal Discord app or interface on Xbox. You will need to have a smartphone on hand to initiate a “broadcast” of your Discord session. Get ready for an annoying setup process for the first time.
If you have an updated Xbox on the Insider OS track, its new “Test Discord voice” prompt will start an account sync process, which requires using a Discord mobile app to take a picture of a QR code that shows your Xbox. (You’ll have to do it again if you’ve done it before, due to adding a new credential level for voice chat.) With that in place, when you’re about to join a voice channel. voice in Discord, one will appear the new message “try voice chat on console”.

This simple interface appears on your phone once everything is connected and all the audio is now managed by the Xbox hardware.
Doing so will create another transfer to Microsoft’s dedicated Xbox app on iOS or Android. Yes, if you want this to work, you need to install the Xbox app on your mobile device (and Discord will suggest that you do so, if you haven’t already). This facilitates the key technical aspect of forwarding all Discord audio to the Xbox hardware.
