Yongah Hill riot: Turk dies after stabbing, riots at Northam Detention Center

A man is believed to have died after being stabbed during a riot at Yongah Hill Detention Center in Northam.

The Coalition for Action on Refugees said the 32-year-old Turkish man died after an altercation with another detainee at the Hawk precinct in the center around midnight on Wednesday.

The coalition said on Thursday it was understood the dead man had been detained at the detention center for three years.

Two men are believed to have been arrested in connection with the stabbing.

The stabbing occurred when there was a riot in the center, with a fire is understood.

Riot police, forensic agents and detectives attended the riot, but authorities have not confirmed the stabbing or details of the riot.

A DFES spokesman confirmed that firefighters attended the detention center around 1.25am on Thursday, but did not go into further details.

“This tragic death must lead to a full investigation into the detention of immigrants,” said Coalition for Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul.

“The conditions in the detention of immigrants are worse than in prison, without any supervision.”

Police are expected to talk about the stabbing and riots soon.
