Heavy rain is sweeping roads in the Interlake area of Manitoba

Heavy rains in Manitoba have wiped out roads in Manitoba’s Interlake region.

The province has been hit by rain, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issuing rain warnings for parts of the Interlake region and wind warnings for parts of southwestern Manitoba.

The video shared with CTV News shows that the water covers sections of Highway 9 and has swept away parts of the highway on Lakeside Road.

Manitoba’s 511 service has confirmed that several roads have been closed. The province said a wash has left Highway 222, about 5km north of Gimli, impassable. He said the same road around Camp Morton, just over 3km north of Gimli is also closed due to washing and water on the road.

The current rain warning for areas like Gimli said many areas have been affected by 30 to 50 mm of rain, with another 10 to 20 mm forecast for Tuesday.

“Heavy showers can cause sudden flooding and accumulation of water on the roads,” says the ECCC warning, which adds that flooding is possible in low-lying areas. “Beware of possible washings near rivers, streams and sewers.”

Manitoba Hydro said heavy rains and wind have also caused disruptions in southwestern Manitoba.

“As wind gusts of up to 90 km / h are expected to continue this afternoon in some areas, we are seeing disruptions persist,” Manitoba Hydro said in a tweet on Tuesday afternoon.
