The Tony Awards are taking place tonight at Radio City Music Hall for the first time since June 2019. The awards ceremony, which honors Broadway plays and musicals and resumes its traditional calendar after a long pandemic break, pays homage to the work that opened on Broadway between February 20, 2020 and May 4, 2022. (“Girl From the North Country” opened on March 5, 2020, just one week earlier that cinemas close due to the pandemic).
Ariana DeBose, a former Oscar-winning Broadway student, presents the three-hour broadcast portion of the Tony Awards ceremony, which begins at 8 p.m. Eastern on CBS. Presenters to date include Jessica Chastain, Bebe Neuwirth and Samuel L. Jackson. And there were performances of some of last year’s most outstanding musicals: “Company,” “Girl From the North Country,” and “MJ,” among others.
The CBS show was preceded by a one-hour segment, presented by Darren Criss and Julianne Hough, which began at 7pm East on Paramount +.
